Permaculture Principles Applied to Urban Site Design by Jack Haley

Formerly the site of Thermador Electric Manufacturing, the property at 5119 District Blvd. in Vernon is now under remediation by the Toxic Substances Control Board. The project will provide an educational facility and open space to the low-income, high density community of Maywood, California. Directly across from Maywood Elementary School, the project will provide ecological education while regenerating natural resources such as water, air, soil and solar energy. Restoration of the adjacent Los Angeles River riparian eco-system will be part of an ongoing effort to improve natural bio-filtration, and water from the river will be filtered and treated; used for irrigation and water features on the site, retrieved back at the drainage point to irrigate the riparian area before it is returned to the river cleaned, filtered, used and respected.
