Hey Fellow Students,
It’s that time again…SCASLA, the Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture at UCLA Extension is holding elections for the 2014-2015 officers and class representatives and we want you to be part of it. This is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow students even better and to network with the Landscape Architecture community, and it’s very impressive on your resume!
The SCASLA group can be whatever the team wants it to be, there are just some basic things that need to get done during the year, such as the student show, besides that, events and structure is totally up to the team. See basic duties of each position below.
The time commitment for SCASLA reps and officers is what you make it. Generally, we have monthly meetings on campus to organize events throughout the year. In addition to being an impressive addition to your resume, SCASLA reps and officers network regularly with fellow students from our program and others, alumni, professionals in the field, and members of ASLA, in other words, the very people who might one day offer you an internship or job.
Also, it’s just a lot of fun.
This is a great way to build your leadership skills, work as a team, meet people in the industry, and gain some recognition. Please let me know which position(s) you are interested in or which position you want to nominate a classmate for by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Basic duties of each officer & representative include:
President (must be a 3rd / 4th year student to apply)
This position is really what you make it, with the help of the team, you can do as much as you have time for. The president runs the meetings and helps coordinate events such as the student show, office tours and guest speakers. They work closely with the program administrators to make sure the student body is kept up on program events and opportunities, while also serving as the voice of the student body, addressing the concerns and issues of the students as needed. The President represents the SCASLA team at the teacher meetings and will also be in contact with the student liaison for the professional chapter, giving them regular updates that will then be passed on at the ASLA meetings.
Supporting the President however needed. Taking the lead sometimes. Helping to develop, plan, and coordinate events and meetings. Emailing students, faculty, alumni, etc. Engaging other students about being involved with SCASLA, ASLA, or other Landscape related events. Attend guidance committee meetings.
Attending SCASLA meetings and taking detailed notes. Compiling the meeting notes and emailing to the team. Updating the members contacts. Generally keeping files organized.
The treasurer is the custodian of the chapter’s funds and accounts. The treasurer delegates purchases upon approval, collects fees, charges and other funds.
Class Representatives (2 people per class year)
The class representatives come to meetings to stay involved with upcoming events, program news, and share the news with classmates.
